Why is it called ‘Black’ Friday?
The earliest known use of Black Friday to refer to the day after Thanksgiving occurred in the early 1950s. By then, many people had started calling in sick on the Friday following the Thanksgiving holiday to enjoy a long weekend. Because so many people were at home, they flooded the city for shopping and leisure, creating chaos with traffic jams, accidents, and shoplifting. This led the Philadelphia police to coin the term ‘Black’ Friday.
