What Kind of Battery Do I Need For Camping?

Unlike before when lead-acid batteries dominate the field of camping, batteries backed with newer technologies are now taking over the market. Deep-cycle batteries are considered the best whether as a camping battery, caravan battery, or battery backup. This battery type functions well even at 80% discharge and lasts for 7-10 years, perfect for frequent use at an extended period of time.

When it comes to deep-cycle batteries, it's usually a battle of lithium deep-cycle batteries vs. AGM deep-cycle batteries. Let's look deep into both of these portable camping battery packs, starting with AGM or Absorbent Glass Mat batteries. These are the most popular batteries in Australia and are often used in a caravan battery setup or in other RVs as well such as camper trailers. Structure-wise, it's built using glass fiber mat separators that help eliminate the risk of acid spills and leaks. Geared to be used for longer timeframes, AGM has made its mark in the camping scene and is generally a great option if you're after a quality battery at a lower price. They also last for up to 7 years with proper care, which can be considered a decent battery lifespan.

Moving on to lithium batteries. While they can be expensive, lithium deep-cycle batteries are usually considered the best out of all battery types. They come in a compact handy form that's 50% lighter than AGM but don't worry, this doesn't mean it has lesser capacity. In fact, it supplies an increased power output and provides a steady stream of energy perfect for running your camping appliances. They also charge 15% faster than conventional batteries and can last up to a decade if used and maintained properly. If you're really keen to invest in a good battery, opt for a LiFEPO4. Aside from superior performance and increased lifespan, it offers you additional security that your camping trip is safe. This battery is incombustible, non-toxic, and has a built-in battery management system to protect against common causes of battery damage.

What Does a Leisure Battery Run?

So camping batteries can sometimes be referred to as leisure batteries. Typically, they are designed for powering 12V appliances in caravans or campsites. These include lights, gadgets, electric kettles, and other smaller equipment. If you want to run larger appliances such as fridges and air conditioners, you need to pair your battery with an inverter. Most of the time, RV owners go for installing an entire solar power system complete with solar panels, solar batteries, inverter, and solar charge controller. This is ideal, especially for those who go on off-grid camping trips often because you get to store energy no matter where you are as long as the sun is shining.

How Do I Choose a Camping Battery?

Looking for specs and features is important, but the first thing you want to consider before buying a new battery would be the circumstances you'd be in when you're using it. First, where are you camping? Is it a campsite that offers other power sources or is it a remote location where you'll be away from any source of mains power? This is crucial because it's one of the determining factors of what size of camping battery you will need. Next, for how long are you planning to camp, and do you have any means of charging your battery in case it falls flat? Lastly, make sure to have an accurate estimate of how much power your trip will require by listing the wattage of your appliances and adding them—yes both starting and running watts—then converting into amps. Usually, a 12V battery is good enough for a couple of days or overnight campouts but if you want something higher, you can go for a 48V battery too.
