There is a specific moment that turns a casual camper into a 12V shopper. It is usually about three in the afternoon on the second day, somewhere with no phone signal, when you open the fridge, and the beer is warm, and the mince has gone the colour of a bad decision.
From that moment on, the question is no longer whether to buy a power setup. It is what to buy, and how little you can spend without ending up back at the same warm fridge.
A thousand dollars is a sensible place to draw the line. It is enough to buy real equipment, and tight enough that every choice has to earn its place. There are three ways to build a complete camping power setup for under $1,000 in Australia.
- Battery and solar. A quiet, fuel-free setup that is ideal for powering everyday camping essentials such as fridges, lights, and personal devices. Solar provides a way to replenish the battery when conditions are right.
- Battery and generator. A more flexible combination that gives you battery storage for everyday use, with a generator available as an additional charging option when solar conditions are poor or power demands are higher.
- Generator only. The simplest option for producing power on demand, without needing to build a separate battery and solar system. The trade-off is that the generator must be running whenever you need to use it.
The rest of this article is the arithmetic behind these three methods.
First, Work Out What You Are Actually Running
Almost every bad power purchase starts with a wattage figure and no load list. Do the list first. It takes five minutes and it will save you several hundred dollars.

The pattern is clear: a fridge, some lights, and a couple of phones typically use around 400 to 700Wh per day, depending on conditions and how often each device is used. A single 12V 100Ah lithium battery stores around 1,280Wh of nominal energy, although the amount of usable energy will depend on the battery's recommended depth of discharge and the efficiency of the overall system.
That is enough capacity for a practical camping setup built around everyday essentials. It is a very different proposition from running a high-demand appliance such as an air conditioner, which can draw 1,500 to 2,000W while operating and requires significantly more power than a basic 12V camping setup is designed to provide.

If money is tight, the Gentrax 12V 100Ah lithium battery costs $329 and drops the subtotal to $817.98. The VoltX is the better battery on paper: three-year warranty against Gentrax's twelve months, IEC 62619 certification, and hundreds of stellar reviews across different platforms.. Whether that is worth $150 to you is a judgement call, not a fact.
Two things about this build deserve emphasis. The battery box and the charge controller are not optional extras. They are the difference between owning a battery and owning a system, and they are the two items first-time builders leave out of the budget almost without exception.
The second is about the sun. A 200W Folding Solar Mat in an Australian summer, with around five peak sun hours, can generate roughly 750 to 850Wh of energy per day after allowing for panel angle, heat and controller losses. That is enough to cover the daily energy needs of a camping fridge, but not enough to fully recharge a flat 1,280Wh battery in a single day. Best for: tent campers, weekenders, anyone camping where generators are banned or frowned upon, and anyone who values silence.
Do not buy this if: you need an air conditioner, or you are heading somewhere with a week of cloud forecast.
Build Two: The Hybrid and the Line Item Nobody Budgets for
This is the build most people think they are buying when they add a generator and a battery to the cart. It is also the hardest of the three to fit under $1,000, for one reason.

That third line is the one that breaks most budgets, and it is the subject of the next section, because if you get it wrong, the rest of the build simply does not work.
Note what this configuration gives up. There is no battery box, because adding one at $79.99 puts you over the line. There is no solar either. What you get in return is weather independence. An hour or two of engine noise in the afternoon puts a full day back into the battery, whatever the sky is doing.
Best for: shoulder season and winter campers, shaded campsites, and anyone who has been burned by a week of rain.
Do not buy this if: you camp exclusively in summer, or you camp in generator-free zones.

Build Three: The Generator-Led Build
At 3.5 kW, this is the only configuration under $1,000 that will run a caravan air conditioner, and that single fact is the whole argument for it.

The GT3500 produces 3.5 kW at peak and 3.0 kW rated, and Outbax rates it to run a caravan air conditioner of up to about 2.5 horsepower, or roughly 2,000W. One owner review on the product page describes running a 240V fridge and an air conditioner on eco mode for three days in 37-degree heat.
The catch is that a generator-only build has no storage. The engine has to run for the power to exist. At 62dB measured at seven metres, the GT3500 is quiet by the standards of the category, and it sits comfortably under the 65dB threshold most park agencies work to, but it is not silent, and your neighbours will know it is there.
There is a cheaper 3.5kW option, the open-frame Gentrax G3500 at $549. It is rated at 65dB, which lands exactly on the line most parks draw. The $350 you save looks like less of a bargain when a ranger asks you to switch it off.
Best for: caravanners and van owners who already have a house battery and want air conditioning.

The Mistake That Ruins Most Hybrid Setups
Every Gentrax inverter generator has a 12V DC outlet on the front panel. The GT3500 even ships with a battery charger cable in the box. It is a natural assumption that this is how you top up a lithium battery at camp.
It is not, and the reason matters.
That outlet is rated at 12V and 5A. That is about 60 watts. Pushing 1,280Wh into a flat 100Ah battery through a 60-watt port would take the better part of a day of continuous engine running, and it would still not finish the job, because a LiFePO4 battery needs a charge voltage of around 14.6V to reach full capacity and a 12V outlet will never get there.
The second point is just as important. While many inverter generators include a 12V DC output, it is generally intended for basic battery charging rather than rapidly recharging a large LiFePO4 battery. A 100Ah lithium battery is best charged using a charger designed specifically for LiFePO4 chemistry, as this provides the correct charging profile to maximise battery performance and lifespan. If you're building a battery-and-generator camping setup, be sure to factor a compatible lithium battery charger into your budget.
What to Do Instead
Plug a lithium profile AC charger into one of the generator's 240V outlets and charge the battery from that. A 30A lithium charger will refill a 100Ah battery in roughly three and a half hours. A 50A lithium charger will do it in about two hours, which is the figure Outbax quotes on the VoltX product page, but a 50A charger draws close to 900W once conversion losses are counted, so it needs a generator with at least 1kW of rated output. On a 0.7 kW GT800, the 30A charger is the sensible pairing.
While we are on the subject, the VoltX manual also states that the battery must not be charged directly from a vehicle's alternator. Charging while you drive requires a DC-DC charger, and those start at $289.99. That is a stage two purchase, not part of a first thousand dollars.

How Long Will a 100Ah Battery Actually Last?
These figures come from Outbax's own product data for the VoltX 12V 100Ah, which stores 1,280Wh.

The hot weather line is the honest one. A 40-degree day in the Flinders will roughly halve your fridge runtime, because the compressor spends far more of every hour running. If you are camping four nights in summer with no solar and no generator, one 100Ah battery is not enough. That is the point at which the hybrid build starts to pay for itself, and it is also the point at which most people discover they should have bought the 200Ah.

What Generator Power Actually Costs
Here is a number nobody in this category publishes.
The GT3500 has a 5.7-litre tank and runs for about 4.1 hours at 50 per cent load. Fifty per cent of its 3.0 kW rated output is 1.5 kW, so a full tank delivers roughly 6.1 kWh of electricity. That works out at about 0.9 litres of 91 RON unleaded per kilowatt hour. At around two dollars a litre, generator electricity costs you somewhere near $1.85 per kilowatt hour.
Mains power, for comparison, is about 35 cents. Solar, once you have paid for the panel, is nothing.
Before you write the generator off, though, do the other sum. Refilling a 100Ah battery takes about 1.3kWh, plus charger losses. Call it 1.5kWh, or roughly 1.4 litres of petrol. Under three dollars.
That is the real trade. Generator power is expensive per unit and cheap per recharge. What you actually pay is not money. It is an hour or two of engine noise, and the small social cost of being the campsite that hums.

Noise, Neighbours, and National Parks
Most Australian park agencies work to a threshold of about 65dB, and units below it are generally permitted. The generator rules vary by park and by campground, and you should check with the managing agency before you go. Some parks ban generators outright, and no decibel figure helps you there.

Setting It Up So It Lasts
Three things drawn from the owner's manuals that you will not find on most camping blogs.
1. Set Your Solar Controller Correctly
A LiFePO4 battery charged on a lead-acid profile will never reach full capacity and will not last as long as it should. The VoltX manual specifies the following.

2. Break-in the Generator
The first 25 hours of generator break-in matter. Keep the load under 75 per cent of rated capacity for that period, then change the oil. Gentrax specifies SAE 10W30 engine oil and 91 RON unleaded petrol.
3. Never Site a Generator Against a Tent
The manual is explicit, and so is common sense. Generators produce carbon monoxide, which is invisible, has no smell, and kills people in this country every year. Run it outdoors on level ground, at least five to seven metres from tents, windows, and awnings. Never inside an annexe. Never in the rain.
One more, this time for the battery. A LiFePO4 cell can only be charged between 0 and 45 degrees. On a frosty morning in the Alps or in Tasmania, the battery management system will refuse to accept charge until things warm up. That is the battery protecting itself, not a fault.

What Owners Actually Say, Including the Complaints
The Gentrax GT3500 has 768 reviews on the Outbax site, 77 per cent of them five stars, with an aggregate score of 89.4. The VoltX 12V 100Ah has 297 reviews, 86 per cent of them five stars.
The complaints are worth reading too. Several GT3500 owners find 28kg heavy to lift into a ute tray alone. At least one has broken the recoil starter housing by pulling too hard. A few report fuel consumption higher than they expected, which tracks with that 4.1-hour tank figure. On the battery side, the most common gripe is the absence of Bluetooth monitoring on the base model, which is a fair criticism and precisely why the Bluetooth version exists.
