Are you hoping to get fit this year? Do you want a leaner, tighter figure? Are you looking for a way to change up your workout routine? Or do you simply want to burn some extra calories after a food-filled festive season? It sounds like it 's time for you to try… kettlebells!

Just what are kettlebells?

Kettlebells are the cannonball-shaped weights with a single handle. Used as an underground fitness tool in Russia for hundreds of years, kettlebells have really hit the mainstream fitness scene and is a must-have for every fitness enthusiast.

1. IT 'S A GREAT SOURCE OF CARDIO

If you love high intensity interval training (HIIT) and all the advantages that come with it, kettlebell training is definitely for you!

Similar to HIIT, kettlebell training consists of short, intensive bursts of energy followed by quick rest periods. This allows your heartrate to elevate as fast and high as it would from jump training, and for your oxygen intake to increase. A study by the American Council of Exercise (ACE) found that eight weeks of kettlebell training two times a week improved aerobic capacity by almost 14% (that 's a lot!).

So, if you are looking to increase or maintain cardiovascular fitness, this type of training is ideal.

2. IT BUILDS MUSCLE

As well as being an effective source of cardio, kettlebell training will also provide you with a whole body strength and conditioning workout. Unlike traditional weights training which isolates particular muscles, kettlebell training targets multiple major muscle groups at once.

Through the actions of lifting and controlling the kettlebell your whole body - especially the core - is forced to contract as a group, allowing you to build both strength and stability. The result of this is that your whole body will become leaner, more toned and functionally stronger - making day-to-day tasks much easier.

3. YOU 'LL FEEL THE BURN

Despite what we 've been told for years, cardio is not the only way to slim down. By incorporating weights training into your workout routine you could enjoy a number of positive effects, including a trimmer figure and increased fat loss.

This is due to the fact there is a high metabolic cost from lifting or throwing weights around, particularly when you are using your whole body.

Still not convinced?

Scientists conducted a study to determine just how effective kettlebell training is as a workout. The study found that kettlebell training can burn up to 400 calories in a 20 minute session (yes!). That 's a whopping 20 calories a minute - the same that you would burn from running 1.6km in 6 minutes!

4. IT 'S EASIER ON YOUR BODY

Kettlebell routines are usually designed so there is a smooth flow from one exercise to the next. These smooth transitions and fluid movements make it feel more natural for your body to move through the steps. This reduces the amount of tension that is placed on your joints, something many people experience during traditional weight training sessions.

However, to reap these benefits, good form is essential.

So if you are looking to get into kettlebell training (as we certainly are), take a session with a PT first to learn the correct technique.

Your body will thank you later!

5. IT'S GREAT FOR YOUR POSTURE

In an age where the majority of our time is spent either hunched at a desk or in front of a computer, it 's difficult to maintain (or in my case, even have) good posture.

As a result of this, the two most important muscles in our posterior chain, the gluteus maximus and the latissimus dorsi (AKA your glutes and lats), go unused.

Luckily, kettlebell training can change this!

Kettlebell training activates these dormant muscles - which must be stabilised to ensure correct form - and strengthens them.

This is achieved by using your glutes to forcefully lock out the hips, and by completing movements that have your body upright and extended, with your chest open.

Trust us, you 'll be standing taller in no time!

Kettlebell training can help you increase your cardiovascular capacity, get stronger, lose weight and improve your posture.

With so many benefits, it is difficult to think of a reason not to include kettlebells in your workout.

What to remember when buying a kettlebell:

If you 're looking for basic, you can stick to the cast iron kettlebell. No thrills here, but they do the trick, come in basic black or gray cast iron.

If you 're in need of something to help protect your floor, equipment or surroundings then you should consider coated kettlebells! From a basic black coat to colorful bright additions of flair, these are cast iron kettlebells that are coated with polyurethane, rubber, vinyl or neoprene.

All of our Kettlebells are made from quality materials that are guaranteed to be safe, comfortable and will last for a long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Am I motivated to use it?

Even if the equipment seems like something you might use, be realistic. For example, if you are not into activities such as dancing, a cardio-dance video might not be the right choice for you. If you know you will not use something, do not spend your money on it. Instead, find something that you will use or do exercises without equipment such as doing sit-ups to help strengthen the abdominal muscles.

  • Is the advertising full of promises such as spot reduction or weight loss?

If the ad focuses on promises or guarantees, it might be too good to be true. And most of the time, it is. Keep in mind that products are marketed to convince you to buy them and the seller doesn't understand your goals. Reaching your goals is up to you and there's no fast or guaranteed way to get healthier with one tool or piece of equipment. It takes hard work and usually other changes, for example eating healthy to reach your goals, not just using one product.

Do I know anyone who has that type of equipment? Talk to friends and family to get an honest opinion about exercise equipment or tools. This can help you decide what type of gym equipment to get.

  • Try the equipment out - IF possible?

Try the product before you buy it so you can see how it works and if you like it. You can sometimes borrow or rent equipment such as treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals before you buy it. Some places will even let you return equipment (if not damaged) after a short trial period. Otherwise, make sure the store you bought from offers a great warranty or returns policy.

  • Is this gear the right size?

If you've decided you want a certain machine or piece of equipment, make sure it's the right size for you. Then you'll be more likely to use it regularly. It's a good idea to try equipment out a few times at a gym before you buy it.

  • Do I need the equipment or can I work the same muscles with other less expensive equipment?

Sometimes an ad can convince you that a piece of equipment is needed to target a certain group of muscles or body part. But, most of the time there are basic exercises or stretches you can do on your own without equipment. There are many exercises you can do instead of using equipment to reach your goals.

  • What's best for me, my family, and my home?

Look at the space you have in your home for equipment. If you don't have a lot of space, look for something smaller or more portable. Large items like treadmills and weight-lifting stations take up a lot of space compared to small items like exercise balls and bands.

  • Who will use the equipment?

If the machine is for more than one family member, make sure everyone can use it safely and that it's right for everyone's size, age, and fitness level. Remember, all fitness equipment needs to be maintained. Think about starting out with second-hand equipment to save some money. Over time, you can buy newer equipment if it's being used regularly.

All of our Gym Equipment are made from quality materials that are guaranteed to be safe, comfortable and will last for a long time.
