What’s better than a deep-cycle battery? A slimline version of it! If you think these batteries can’t be any more portable, then you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Slim deep-cycle batteries have all the benefits of a regular deep-cycle battery that makes it perfect for camping, caravanning, and even for marine applications. For a little refresher, deep-cycle batteries are designed to supply reliable power at up to 80% discharge level. They give off a reduced yet steadier stream of power suited for use over a sustained period of time.

These batteries are also built to repeatedly charge and discharge without their overall lifespan declining. You get to enjoy up to 7 to 10 years of battery life with proper usage, plus a fast-charging feature that works well when you’re topping up your battery during your off-grid camping trips.

What Are the Best Deep-Cycle Batteries In Australia?

In terms of sales, the Giant Power 140AH is the best-deep selling battery in Australia. Aside from top-notch quality, this battery bank features equally excellent terminal bolts and is compatible with all major battery boxes in the country. This 12V deep cycle battery is also built to last for over 10 years and is even backed with a 5-year warranty to further extend its life.

If we're going to talk about slimline deep-cycle batteries, a popular name would be the Kickass 12V Slim Deep Cycle Battery. Boasting an impressive capacity housed in a corrosion-resistant, durable ABS container, this is perfect for almost all types of RVs and 4WDs including caravans and camper vans. The narrow external also means that it's space-savvy, perfect for vehicles or campsites with limited space.

Here at Outbax, we have our own collection of slimline deep-cycle batteries too. Our 12V slim blade battery will be the handiest power pack you've ever seen—sort of like a briefcase. Lightweight at 15.5kg, it encases 36 batteries made up of prismatic cells for optimal performance every time. This 100Ah deep-cycle battery gives you over 2000 battery cycles and since it's a LiFEPO4, you won't have to worry about it catching fire or exploding as well. We have more slim lithium deep-cycle batteries available on our website that you might want to have a look at, plus other camping gear too including inverter generators and solar panels

Is a Marine Starting Battery the Same As a Deep-Cycle Battery?

It was mentioned earlier that deep-cycle batteries are great for marine applications or boat batteries, as others would call it. So does this mean it's similar to a boat's starting battery? No. A starting or cranking battery is meant to kickstart your boat's engine only. It supplies short bursts of concentrated power suited for short-term use, unlike a deep-cycle battery which produces a consistent stream of energy to help run your appliances on board. If you're planning on a boating trip soon, make sure you get these batteries separately and install them as part of a dual battery system. Another option would be to get a marine battery instead, as these are designed to perform both the function of starting your engine and powering your equipment.

How To Trickle Charge a Deep-Cycle Battery?

One of the best ways to take care of your deep-cycle battery and maximise its lifespan is to charge it properly with an appropriate battery charger. This is done through trickle charging. If you're new at this, here is a step-by-step instruction to help you get started.

1. Disconnect your battery (if applicable) and make sure you place it in a clean, dry area with ample ventilation.

2. Remove the covers of your battery cells to check their electrolyte level. You can use a flat head screwdriver to do this. For your safety, make sure you wear rubber gloves and protective eyeglasses in case of contact with the interior acid in the cell.

3. Insert your hydrometer into one cell and draw fluid to read its level according to the provided instruction. Add water if the cell is low and recap once you're done.

4. Set your battery to a trickle charge especially if it's a 6V, 12V, or 12V one. If your battery allows you to select the voltage for the charge, place it at 20% of the rated amp/hour rate of your battery.

5. Connect the cables to the correct terminal posts—connect the positive one first before the negative.

6. Switch on the charger and wait for 20 mins before checking your charge meter for a more accurate reading. You can also use a voltage regulator to make this easier.
