When you are in the great outdoors, you don’t want to hear the noise of an engine running, so it’s best to look for quiet generators for camping. This is because you still might want to enjoy home comforts while you are enjoying nature. It’s good to have a hot drink or cook your food easily, and it’s essential to be able to charge your phone in case of an emergency. Portable, quiet generators for camping can do this at the same time as keeping the noise level down so that everyone can enjoy the serenity.

The best types of quiet generators for camping include portable inverter generators and battery generators. Still, they have differences in performance quality and noise output, so you need to do research to ensure you are getting the low decibels and the performance you need – for the hours you want.

What size generator do I need for camping?

There are lots of different generators in different sizes. They are also powered differently – from petrol and diesel in fuel-powered generators to battery ones, which are charged from an outlet or by solar power. When looking for quiet generators for camping, the rule of thumb is the larger the equipment, the more watts it is going to have and therefore, the higher load can be drawn down to power up your appliances. However, if quiet is the main factor, a powerful diesel-run generator will make a lot of noise – and add a lot of weight.

When choosing the size for your quiet generator for camping, you need to look at the amount of watts your equipment needs to run and for initial start-up. The start-up requirement will be much higher than the energy needed to keep the appliance or device running. Then you can work out the total amount of energy consumption that will occur. Small electronics like a phone, speaker or laptop are not going to have a huge consumption level, but if you want to run a microwave, for example, that is going to need a higher amount of watts. To run a few basics, a 2000w generator would be a good start.

Of course, you also need to think about how you are going to get to your campsite. If you need to carry your quiet generator for camping, then you want lightweight equipment. A small camping generator – the smallest generator is likely to be a battery generator or an inverter generator – will not only be silent, or at least quieter, but also more lightweight. If you are going in a caravan, then you can perhaps afford the space and size of a larger generator for a caravan

What appliances can I run with a generator?

Essentially, most household appliances can be run off a generator, and you can run as many appliances as your generator can sustain, but make sure not to overload it. In order to check that your appliances can be run on the generator you intend to buy, you really need to check consumption, as previously mentioned. However, when thinking about what appliances you will use, you should also think about whether you will be running those appliances at the same time. For example, you might want to charge your phone while keeping your fridge and lights on in your caravan, so will need the requisite power. Furthermore, you need to check that the generator you want to buy has the correct number and type of outlets to allow you to plug in your appliances and use them concurrently. However, you aren’t going to be able to run an air conditioner on a 2000w generator – and a generator that will run air conditioning is not likely to be one of the quieter generators for camping.

How to set up a generator when camping?

Before you set up your generator, you need to consider restrictions and courtesy and read the manual. Not all places in Australia allow the use of generators, so you need to check that out first. Also, if there are other people around, it’s a good idea to just check with them before you set up your generator, no matter how quiet it is. Generators can be dangerous if not handled correctly, so it’s really important to be well informed about safety to avoid harm to yourself and others. If you are using a generator for camping that is fuel-driven, such as a petrol generator, no matter whether it is a quiet generator for camping or one that pumps out a load of decibels, it must be set up outside. This is because it releases carbon monoxide. It also needs to be set up at a distance from the campsite or caravan, for the same reason. However, it also needs to be kept dry, and you should never touch any of the components of a generator with bare, wet hands. Furthermore, sparks, static and flames should also be kept away from the generator, so there is no chance of it catching fire.

Outbax has a range of generators for different uses, such as marine generators ready for your next adventure, so check them out online.
