Carting a reliable battery for your camping trip is among the many ways you can keep your portable appliances and electronic gadgets powered. AGM battery or Absorbed Glass Mat battery are commonly used for outdoor activities before but lithium batteries, particularly LiFEPO4, have been rising in the market as well when it comes to the best camping batteries. LiFEPO4 batteries present a number of advantages over traditional lead-acid batteries in terms of efficiency, portability and safety. Also known as lithium iron phosphate batteries, these are designed to last for more than 10 years and hold incredible power packed in a smaller, lightweight unit.

The biggest advantage of LiFEPO4 is its safety. Equipped with a built-in battery management system (BMS), it allows you to monitor various battery elements including cell voltage, cell temperature, overcharge or over-discharge. It's also composed of non-toxic material and won't catch fire even when punctured.

How do I choose a camping battery?

The first step to choosing the right camping battery is to know how much power output you will need for your outdoor trip. To do this, calculate the wattage of every appliance that is drawing power and estimate how long you use it. Once you know the Ah that each device uses per day, multiply it by the number of days you're going to be without electricity. For example, if the total capacity of all your appliances and gadgets is 33.36Ah and you're going to be off-the-grid for 3 days, multiply those two together. You will get a sum of 100.8Ah so ideally, you will need a battery with a minimum of 120Ah. Among other factors to consider when buying a leisure battery is its charge rate, service life, operating temperature range, and of course, conformity with safety standards.

How do you charge a battery while camping?

AGM can be charged either with a solar panel or a battery charger. If you're going to use solar energy, you will need to have a controller or regulator between the solar panels and battery to prevent overcharging. On the other hand, when you have access to a mains power, you can just plug a charger into a power point and connect it to the battery.

When it comes to lithium batteries, the most ideal way of charging is through a lithium iron phosphate battery charger as this is programmed with the appropriate voltage limits. While lead-acid battery chargers can be used for this as well, a wet lead-acid battery charger tends to have a higher voltage limit, which may cause errors on the charger display.

If you're going to charge your lithium batteries in parallel, it's best to charge each battery individually and makes sure the voltage is within 50mV of each other before connecting them. This is to prevent imbalance and maximise the system's performance. It's the same case when charging your batteries in series. Additionally, charging lithium batteries with a multi-bank charger is highly recommended as well.

How long will a camping battery last?

With proper use and maintenance, most camping batteries last up to 6 years. There are also ways to extend your battery's lifespan. First, make sure that you recharge a discharged battery right away, especially if it's a 12v battery. When a battery is below 12v for extended periods of time, it is at or below a 50% level of charge which is considered to be fully discharged, and may moderately affect its lifespan.

This is another benefit of LiFEPO4 batteries as they generally last longer, sometimes even up to a decade if cared for correctly. They can last up to 5000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge without decreasing in performance, giving you great value for your money.
