The 12 volt lithium battery is ideal to store power generated from a series of solar panels. While solar panels are efficient at generating electrical current, they cannot store any electrical charge, so if it is not used immediately it can be lost. It may be possible to connect a solar panel to any appliance that can make use of direct current, this includes laptops and phones. However, for the best results, especially as you can control the current, connecting any appliance to a fully charged battery is ideal.
To work out how much power you’ll need in any situation, you’ll need to examine everything you’ll have running and figure out the exact amount of amp hours (Ah) you’ll be using. You can then match that figure with a battery of a suitable Ah rating. If you’re camping or in a place that you can’t recharge the battery under mains power, you’ll need to have enough solar panels to recharge the batteries once they are depleted.
How does a 12 volt lithium battery work?
A 12 volt lithium battery works in a similar way that a standard lead acid battery works, with a few minor but important differences. The biggest of these differences is that the lithium battery (or Lifepo4 battery) does not contain any liquid that results in the venting of internally produced gases, and the best models (such as those offered by Outbax) do not require any maintenance to keep them working in excellent condition. Lithium batteries are made of many internal cells, which is similar to the majority of batteries. These cells have a nominal voltage of 3.2v, so to get to 12v there are usually four cells connected in a series inside the hard plastic case.
Does a 12 volt lithium battery require a special charger?
Any 12 volt lithium battery can be recharged using a lithium charger, a suitable solar panel, and in some circumstances, you can use a standard lead acid battery charger. While it is possible we would only recommend a lead acid battery charger if you have no other means to charge up the battery as there is a possibility that you can damage the internal workings of the lithium battery. When using a lead acid battery charger, you’ll need to make sure that the maximum voltage is set to an appropriate level, and that the automatic equalisation mode is turned on. If your charger doesn’t have these then it is best not to use them, however, the most modern charger will come with it as standard.
When you’re away from a grid power supply you can use solar panels to provide your 12 volt lithium battery with power. It’ll recharge fully in a few hours depending on the specific wattage of your solar panels. To work out how long the battery will take to recharge you’ll need to calculate the wattage of your solar panels with how many hours of sunlight you’re getting. Using a 200w solar panel on an average day in Australia, you can expect to get around 1,400 watts of power. This will generate about 116Ah of available power for your battery, which is perfect to get a 100ah lithium battery to full charge and ready for use.
